The Massacre Of The Ottoman Princes
25 × 30 cm (10" × 12")
This painting revisits one of the darkest episodes of Ottoman history: the night when the nineteen brothers of Sultan Mehmed III were executed to secure his reign.
At the center of the composition, a sleeping infant lies in a cradle—peaceful, unaware of the fate that awaits him.
In the foreground, his mother collapses to the ground, as she tries, in a final instinct, to shield and interfere. In her arms, almost hidden, the faint silhouette of another child appears—a young boy, no more than three or four years old. He, too, is marked for death.
A shadowed figure—evoking the reaper—approaches with a silk cord in hand, the method used to execute royal blood without spilling it.
To the side, a nurse turns away, her face concealed, unable to witness what is about to unfold. A mother is about to watch both her sons taken from her—strangled before her eyes in a single night.
This work stands as a social and political critique of absolute power and its mechanisms of preservation. It exposes a system where lineage becomes a threat, and where the elimination of children is justified in the name of stability.
Material and FormThe palette reinforces this historical weight. Dominant tones of brown and parchment beige, enriched with golden undertones, evoke the texture of ancient manuscripts—fragments of a past preserved, archived, and often sanitized. Deep red emerges as a royal color, symbolizing both power and blood. Turquoise blue reflects nobility and imperial refinement, while shades of grey and black embody death, inevitability, and mourning.
Thank you for supporting slow, intentional art.
Each work carries time, memory, and meaning.
